February 28
The 2010 CSHL season began recently with a hard fought tournament that raised some interested eyebrows. Prior to the beginning of the tourney, the 2008 championship banner (won by Garth) was raised to the roof during a ceremony that celebrated his historic victory. Due to scheduling conflicts there was no 2009 season, therefore, with play underway for 2010 the CSHL is back and stronger than ever.
Opening Night 2010 was played at a neutral location in Sylvan Lake Alberta as the 3 players enjoyed some pre-tournament festivities out on the frozen lake.
The first match-up of the night and of the new season was very nostalgic as Garth took on Stef. The two beasts of the league went head to head with more than pride on the line. The game was very close and at the end of regulation time the score was tied 13-13 and shots even at 26-26. Clint was heard saying, “This game is more even than a 2X4 on a see-ment sidewalk”. Yeah, sure, whatever there Clint. As overtime began so too did Stef’s dominance. Overtime lasted for what seemed like an eternity (6 minutes) before Stef culminated his powerful play with a goal, winning the game in OT by the score of 14-13 while the shots were 36-28.
The second game of the night had the winner (Stef) taking on Clint. Historically this matchup has shown Clint to look as awkward as a domesticated moose as he’s crashed around the ice without much success. Tonight however, he was primed to give Stef a run for his money. The game was close with shots dead even at 25-25, but in the end Stef’s testicular fortitude once again got the better of Clint as Stef won the game 7-6.
The third game of the night had Garth and Clint battling to see who would face Stef in the tournament final. Garth jumped out to an early lead but then figuratively became distracted by an pair of brown corduroy pants. Clint seized the opportunity to pound some pucks past Garth and won the game convincingly by the score of 15-10.
The scene was set, the tourney final matchup was Stef (2-0) vs. Clint (1-1). You have to look all the way back to January 9th of 2003 for the last time Clint defeated Stef in a tourney final game. Since that date, Stef has gone 11-0 in tourney final games when facing Clint. Prior to the game Clint was overheard blubbering about his chronic thumb injury and how he hoped that it would not negatively affect his play. Stef commented that it was probably Clint’s immense amount of suck that he should be more concerned about. Stef held the lead early in the game and never looked back from there. Frequently during the game Stef provided some commentary in regards to Clint’s play. The words “crap”, “stanky” and “sad” were used often as they punctuated Clint’s dismal performance. Stef rang up the score and won the game 12-4.
This was Stef’s 36th career tournament win and his first of the 2010 season.
